The booking system, 12306 (中国铁路12306), used to be a nightmare for foreigners. Since November 2020, it has an English version that accepts foreign passports. Here's how to use it.
Step 1: Download the App or Use the Website
- App: Search "12306" in your app store. The official app has a blue icon with a train. It has an English interface — switch the language in settings.
- Website: Go to 12306.cn. Click "English" at the top right.
Do this before you arrive in China. The English version requires an email and phone number for registration — international numbers work, no Chinese phone needed.
Step 2: Register an Account
- Open the app or website → tap Register (注册).
- Select your ID type: Passport (护照 - hù zhào).
- Enter your passport number, name (exactly as on passport), nationality, gender, and date of birth.

Critical: Your name must match your passport exactly, including middle names. "John Smith" on your passport means "John Smith" on 12306 — not "J. Smith" or "Smith John." If your name is very long, enter your last name correctly and fit as many first names as possible.

Step 4: Buy the Ticket
- Select your train → choose seat class:

Step 5: At the Station

Problem 3: Passport Won't Scan at the Gate
