DiDi China: Ride Hailing (滴滴出行 - dīdī chū xíng) is China's equivalent of Uber. It's bigger, cheaper, and more widely available than traditional taxis. The English interface works well, and you can get a ride anywhere in China without speaking a word.
Step 1: Download the App
- iPhone: Search "DiDi China" in the App Store. Look for the orange icon.
- Android: Search "DiDi China" in Google Play, or download from didiglobal.com.
Do this before you arrive in China — Google Play is not accessible inside China without a VPN.
The app has a full English interface. If it opens in Chinese, go to Settings (设置) → Language → English.
Step 2: Register
- Open the app → tap Sign Up.
- Enter your phone number (your home number works — select the correct country code).
- Verify via SMS code.
- You'll be asked for ID verification — use your passport.
Step 3: Set Up Payment
Option A: Alipay (Recommended)

Step 4: Call a Ride
- Enter your destination in the search bar. You can type in English — DiDi's search understands English place names (e.g., "Beijing Railway Station," "Pudong Airport").
- Confirm your pickup location on the map. Drag the pin to exactly where you're standing. This is crucial — Chinese addresses are imprecise, and the map pin is how the driver finds you.

- Tap Confirm → the app matches you with a nearby driver.
- You'll see the driver's name, photo, license plate, and rating. Memorize the last 3 digits of the plate — that's how you'll identify the car.
Step 5: Communicating with the Driver
You don't need to speak Chinese. The app handles communication:
- Pickup: The driver sees your GPS location. Stand at the pin. If you're inside a building, walk to the nearest street entrance.
- In-app messaging: The DiDi app has a built-in auto-translate feature. Type in English, it shows the driver Chinese, and vice versa. Common auto-messages: "I've arrived" (我到了), "Please wait" (请稍等).
- Phone calls: If the driver calls you and you don't speak Chinese, say "nihao, wo shi waiguoren, qing yong DiDi liaotian" (hi, I'm a foreigner, please use DiDi chat). Then hang up — the driver will message you through the in-app chat with auto-translation.
Pro tip: Set your pickup location to a landmark, not a street address. "Near the Starbucks" or "at the north gate of the park" works better than "Building 3, Lane 5, Dongfeng Road."
